Comparison of different versions of the morning and evening recitations

There are several different versions of the morning and evening recitations in existence: a version from the 正一 Zhengyi Orthodox Unity-school, at Wudang-mountain a version of the 全真Quanzhen Complete Reality school is used, there is the 三清自然門早晚功課經 Sanqing Ziranmen Zaowan Gongkejing, Scripture of the Morning and Evening Recitations of the Gate to Naturalness of the Three Purities and -the perhaps oldest version?- the 清微宏範道門功課 Qingwei Hongfan Daomen Gongke that can be found in the 道藏輯要Daozang Jiyao. In my experience at (for the most 全真Quanzhen-temples) the Baiyunguan (Peking), Yuanxiaogong (Wudangshan), Yuanxiaogong (Kongtongshan), Yuhuangdian (Wuduoshan), Changchunguan (Wuhan) en de Baxiangong in Xi’an, the 太上玄門早晚壇功課經 Taishang Xuanmen Zaowantan Gongkejing the Scripture of Recitations of Merit for the Morning and Evening Altar of the Gate to the Mystery by the Highest is the most commonly used version of the daily recitations. Differences between Quanzhen and Zhengyi versions and Quanzhen and Zhengyi versions amongst themselves center mostly on the subjects of the hymns to the gods, saints, immortals and patriarch’s they contain. Locally additions may be made to the recitations according to special affinities with gods, saints and immortals.

Morning recitations

The numbered versions of the morning recitations are Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) versions, the remaining versions are associated with the Quanzhen (Complete Reality) school. With the exception of one: 太上玄門正一日誦早晚課 Daily Morning and Evening Orthodox Unity recitations of the Mysterious Gate by the Highest, the Zhengyi versions of the recitations do not make a clear distinction between a morning and evening version in the text. The ‘Orthodox Unity recitations of the Mysterious Gate’ seems to be a hybrid version of the Orthodox Unity and Mysterious Gate versions of the daily recitations, perhaps a local publication. For the before mentioned reasons, the section on the evening recitations contains only one Zhengyi-version: the Daily Morning and Evening Orthodox Unity recitations of the Mysterious Gate.
